BAT OVERVIEW
BAT helps animals gain confidence and social skills. BAT is a natural method that creates an emotionally safe interaction with minimal intrusion. BAT is especially useful when the “triggers” for frustration, aggression, or fear are living beings, for example when dogs bark at or bite other dogs or people.
BAT gives the dog a sense of freedom while the caregiver still has control of safety. The freely wandering style of BAT can be adapted to work in a metropolis. Get first-hand tips from NYC trainer and CBATI Viviane Arzoumanian. 2.5 CEUs for trainers.
BAT for City Dogs & Busy Areas
Grisha Stewart, founder of Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) asked Viviane, a Certified BAT instructor to teach a webinar about how to apply BAT in a truly urban setting.
This webinar is for anyone who has some familiarity with BAT. The BAT technique for reactivity, frustration, and fear works best when we can give the dog space and time to observe a situation below threshold. Ideally this requires places were it’s possible to create set-ups that have tons of space and are secluded enough to avoid uncontrolled triggers while working on BAT.
However, if you live in downtown New York, São Paulo, or a number of other super-busy cities, it’s just not possible to find a space to do BAT the ‘official’ way for very long.
After becoming a CBATI in 2013, Viviane developed a city version of BAT that brings elements of this powerful tool to everyone regardless of population density and city hubbub.
She teaches her clients how to integrate the wandering style of BAT for whatever small moments work (30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, whatever they can get) and the rest of the time using other BAT strategies. This webinar is chock full of practical information, video demonstrations, and a follow-up Q&A.
Recorded live on December 15, 2020.
