Why is PumpkinPups Dog Training still offering virtual puppy classes?

By Julie Wintrob, CPDT-KA, FFCP, FDM

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, like many people we had to switch from teaching in-person classes to virtual classes. I know that was true for many others in different fields of work from teachers to doctors and even judges.

Even though we are no longer in the grip of the pandemic, the benefits for both the dogs and the humans that we discovered during COVID remain!

Here are some benefits of virtual classes I have observed for dog owners:

Comforts of Home

Many puppy owners found it easier to meet their pups’ needs from home where they could offer a treasure trove of toys, chews, and treats during the discussion points of class. Owners were able to have everything they needed on hand for class and didn’t worry about forgetting something.

No Travel Time

Whether you travel by bike, foot, car, or public transportation, traveling with a young pup and all of the necessities can be tiring and a hassle. Also depending on where you live some modes of transportation are not so reliable and so then there is the added stress of worrying about being on time to class. Attending a virtual class removes that stress from your day.

Familiar Environment

Introducing a puppy to a new space and asking them to learn for a whole hour can be a lot! Training in a familiar environment like your home can make it easier for your pup to learn during class. It is less likely for there to be distractions in your home. One common distraction is the other puppies in class.

Training in the Moment

House training, nipping, and barking are common topics that are covered in most puppy classes. It is beneficial for the class trainer to see how your puppy acts in your home so that they can help the class trainer tailor their training advice.

Record, Rewatch, and Review

For the virtual classes we use Zoom and record each class. This gives us the ability to send the recording to all of my students as part of their homework email. The recording can be a great tool for those who may want to do the following

  • Rewatch and take notes on points they missed the first time.

  • Review the class so they can practice in between classes with their pups.

  • Share with the rest of the family. It’s not always possible for all of the family members to attend class. Family members who missed the class can watch the recording so that everyone in the home is on the same page.

And what about socialization to other puppies?

The trainers on PumpkinPups team host a free in-person Puppy Play Group at Dogtopia twice a month.  Once in Clinton Hill and once in Long Island City.

If you are expecting a puppy soon or a puppy has recently joined your home you can register for virtual puppy classes here.
